Technical diving (sometimes referred to a Tek diving) is a form of scuba diving that exceeds the scope of recreational diving in that generally, the diver cannot freely ascend to the surface. It is a discipline that utilizes special methods, equipment, training and skills to improve underwater safety and performance, enabling divers to explore a wide range of underwater environments and perform tasks beyond the scope of the recreational open water diver.

Technical divers require advanced training, extensive experience, specialized equipment and often breathe breathing gases other than air or standard nitrox. It is most often conducted in the “overhead environment” of a cave, wreck, or decompression ceiling where the diver cannot freely ascend to the surface.

Technical diver training provides vital preparation for activities ranging from cave diving to deep-ocean wreck diving. Without the skills learned in Advanced Nitrox Diver and Decompression Procedures, Florida cave divers are limited in both range and bottom time. Without Extended Range, the wreck divers are limited to shallow depth wrecks.
